The Inventory of Hazardous Materials – IHM – includes 3 parts:

THE HAZARDOUS MATERIALS CONTAINED IN THE STRUCTURE OR EQUIPMENT OF THE SHIP

  • Collecting and reviewing the documents given by the on-board staff or the client
  • Analyzing the information contained in the collected documents
  • Establishing the sampling plan and visual check plan
  • Conducting the sampling and visual check, then sending the samples to an accredited laboratory
  • Editing the report of sampling and visual check

THE GENERATED WASTE PRESENT ON BOARD

  • Establishing the list of the waste present on board the ship, including the operationnally generated waste

THE STORES PRESENT ON BOARD

  • Inventory of the stores present on board the ship, taking into account the parts I and II

REGULATION

The IHM expertise (Inventory of Hazardous Materials) is the searching, the identification, the location and the quantification of the materials and products listed in the annex II of the EU regulation n° 1257/2013 of 20 November 2013, and under the tables A, B, C and D of the guidelines MEPC 269(68) of 15 May 2015.

APPLICATION

Effective January 1, 2021, every following ship must be in possession of its IHM certificate:

All types of ship of 500 GT or more, flying the flag of an EU country
^
All ships from non-EU countries calling at a port or anchorage of a EU State
^
All ships flying the flag of EU that must be dismantled at a registered ship recycling facility
^
All new ships constructed under the EU flag must be in possession of an IHM certificate and a statement of compliance
^
During the maintenance of a shipyard
^
Any ship repaired after an accident or a damage
^
Any ship that undergo a replacement of machinery, equipment or hull coating
^
If the flag or the owner of the ship change
The IHM responsibility lies directly to the ship owners or indirectly to the technical direction
